Halloween may be over, but the theme park season is not quite finished yet.
Across the UK, early November still brings a final opportunity to experience major rollercoasters, rides in the dark and end-of-season fireworks before many parks enter their winter break.
Then the focus shifts towards Christmas and winter operations, with selected UK parks keeping family rides open while some of Europe's biggest theme parks continue operating substantial attraction line-ups well into January.
From Alton Towers Fireworks and Paultons Park's winter weekends to Phantasialand Wintertraum, Europa-Park and Winter Efteling, there are still plenty of opportunities for another theme park trip before spring 2027.
Here is our guide to the UK and European theme parks worth knowing about this winter.
Winter 2026 at a glance
Want one final UK day on the major coasters? Alton Towers Fireworks runs from 6 to 8 November.
Want proper thrill rides throughout winter? Phantasialand, Europa-Park and Efteling are among the strongest options in Europe.
Planning a Christmas theme park break? Disneyland Paris, Europa-Park, LEGOLAND Windsor, Chessington and Paultons Park all run substantial festive seasons.
Looking for something after Christmas? Several events continue into January, including Winter Efteling, Phantasialand Wintertraum and Europa-Park's winter season.
Fancy combining rides with a water park? Europa-Park Resort's Rulantica remains open through winter.
Alton Towers Fireworks offers one final major coaster weekend
If you want one final full-scale UK theme park day before winter, Alton Towers is probably the obvious choice.
The resort's Fireworks Spectacular runs from 6 to 8 November 2026 and serves as the traditional finale to the main Alton Towers season.
This year's show, Across the Altonverse, begins at 7pm each evening and lasts approximately 25 to 30 minutes.
More importantly for enthusiasts, the weekend offers one of the final opportunities of 2026 to experience rides including Nemesis Reborn, Wicker Man, The Smiler and Oblivion before the major attractions enter their winter break.
Fireworks dates are normally extremely busy, so arriving early and getting priority rides completed before the evening crowds build is sensible.
Alton Towers switches to family Christmas operation
After Fireworks, the full Alton Towers theme park does not remain open through winter.
Instead, the resort switches to a much smaller Christmas operation aimed primarily at families with younger children.
Santa Sleepovers run on selected dates between 27 November and 23 December, combining accommodation with festive entertainment, Santa experiences and a reduced selection of rides.
The major rollercoasters are not part of the normal Christmas line-up.
Alton Towers Waterpark, however, continues to provide an indoor attraction during the colder months.
If Nemesis Reborn or The Smiler are your priority, visit during Fireworks. Christmas at Alton Towers is a very different type of trip.
Paultons Park continues through winter
Paultons Park takes a different approach and continues operating on selected dates after Halloween.
Its reduced winter season begins in November, with admission reflecting the smaller attraction line-up.
Even with some attractions closed, there is still a reasonable selection of rides operating, making these quieter weekends potentially good value if your must-do attractions are included.
The park then moves into its Celebration of Christmas during selected December dates through to 3 January 2027.
Christmas at Paultons Park
Paultons is arguably one of the strongest UK Christmas options if you still want a proper theme park day.
The Celebration of Christmas includes festive entertainment, Christmas illuminations, Santa's Storytime until Christmas Eve and Peppa Pig World decorated for the season.
Unlike some UK Christmas events, a substantial selection of the normal attraction line-up continues operating.
That makes Paultons particularly appealing to families who want Christmas atmosphere without giving up most of the rides.
LEGOLAND Windsor at Christmas
LEGOLAND Windsor's festive season runs on selected dates from 21 November through to 3 January 2027.
The park transforms with Christmas lights, a giant DUPLO Christmas tree, festive shows, LEGO activities and selected rides.
Tickets start from £34 on selected dates.
Not every normal attraction operates through winter, so checking the ride availability list before booking is important if there is something your family particularly wants to experience.
Best for: Families with younger children who want rides alongside a full Christmas atmosphere.
Christmas and Twixmas at Chessington
Christmas at Chessington runs on selected dates from 21 November to 24 December.
The event combines the Christmas Village and Father Christmas with festive entertainment, selected theme park rides, the zoo and SEA LIFE centre.
For 2026, Chessington also adds a Cinderella pantomime alongside its Jingle Voices carollers.
After Christmas, the resort continues with Twixmas from 27 December until 3 January 2027.
The Christmas Village closes after Christmas Eve, but selected rides and entertainment continue.
Best for: Families looking for a varied winter day out rather than a thrill-heavy theme park visit.
Drayton Manor bridges Halloween and Christmas
Drayton Manor begins the winter transition with its End of Season Fireworks on 31 October and 1 November.
It then switches into Magical Christmas on selected dates from 28 November to 24 December.
The event includes Thomas Land rides, festive entertainment, the Enchanted Christmas Grotto and an Aladdin pantomime.
Drayton Manor also continues with Twixmas from 27 to 31 December.
This is another event primarily aimed at families rather than visitors expecting the complete summer ride line-up.
Disney Enchanted Christmas at Disneyland Paris
If you want a full theme park holiday rather than a reduced seasonal event, Disneyland Paris becomes one of the obvious winter options.
Disney Enchanted Christmas runs from 7 November 2026 until 6 January 2027.
The season includes Mickey's Dazzling Christmas Parade, festive character appearances, seasonal shows and the huge Christmas tree in Town Square.
Christmas also expands into World of Frozen at Disney Adventure World for the first time in 2026, with Arendelle receiving festive decorations and its own seasonal entertainment.
The big advantage is that Christmas sits on top of the normal Disney park experience rather than replacing most of it.
Major attractions continue operating, subject to normal maintenance and weather restrictions.
Best for: A proper multi-day theme park trip where Christmas is an addition rather than the entire reason for visiting.
Phantasialand Wintertraum
For coaster enthusiasts, Phantasialand Wintertraum is one of the strongest winter theme park events in Europe.
Wintertraum runs from 14 November 2026 until 24 January 2027, with the park generally operating from 11am until 8pm.
Rather than stripping the park back to a small family line-up, Phantasialand continues to operate the majority of its attractions during winter.
That means the possibility of experiencing rides such as Taron after dark while the park's themed areas are covered in elaborate winter lighting.
The season also includes winter food, shows and the evening Magic Symphony finale.
Some attractions, particularly water rides, close during winter, while weather can affect outdoor operations.
But for enthusiasts looking for genuine thrill rides in December or January, this is hard to beat.
Best for: Coaster enthusiasts and anyone who wants major rides after dark.
Europa-Park Winter Magic
Europa-Park also remains a proper theme park throughout winter.
Winter Magic runs from 28 November 2026 until 9 January 2027, with Europa-Park open daily from 11am until at least 7pm, excluding 24 and 25 December.
The park fills with Christmas trees, festive markets, lights, campfires and seasonal shows while continuing to operate a significant proportion of its attraction line-up.
Weather can affect individual rides, particularly during periods of ice, snow, strong wind or extreme temperatures.
But unlike many UK Christmas events, you are still visiting Europa-Park as a full-scale theme park.
There is another major advantage for winter trips: Rulantica.
Europa-Park Resort's water world remains open through winter, allowing visitors to combine rollercoasters and Christmas markets with a day at one of Europe's biggest water parks.
Best for: A full winter resort break combining rides, Christmas atmosphere and Rulantica.
Winter Efteling
Winter Efteling runs from 16 November 2026 until 31 January 2027, making it one of the longest-running winter theme park seasons on this list.
The Dutch park is filled with lights, fires, winter food and seasonal entertainment, while its fairytale-heavy environment naturally suits darker winter days.
Importantly, Efteling confirms that its outdoor rollercoasters continue operating during Winter Efteling when weather conditions allow.
That means rides can still form a significant part of the visit alongside the park's extensive collection of indoor attractions.
Planned maintenance is particularly important during winter, so checking Efteling's attraction calendar before booking is strongly recommended.
Best for: Atmosphere, dark rides and anyone looking for a European theme park trip well into January.
Where should coaster enthusiasts go this winter?
If the rides matter more than meeting Father Christmas, the list becomes much shorter.
In the UK, Alton Towers Fireworks is the strongest opportunity for one final full-scale coaster day before the winter shutdown.
Paultons Park then offers one of the better Christmas ride selections once December arrives.
But mainland Europe is where winter theme park trips really come into their own.
Phantasialand Wintertraum, Europa-Park and Winter Efteling all continue operating substantial attraction line-ups, weather permitting.
They are therefore much better choices if you want the winter atmosphere without sacrificing most of the theme park experience.
What about water parks?
Winter does not necessarily mean the end of water park season either.
Indoor water parks can actually become more appealing once outdoor theme parks begin closing.
Rulantica at Europa-Park Resort is the standout option for a European theme park trip because it can easily be combined with Europa-Park's Winter Magic season.
Alton Towers Waterpark also continues operating during much of the UK winter.
One notable exception this year is Waterworld Stoke-on-Trent, where the Aqua Park has closed for a significant refurbishment and is expected to reopen in early 2027.
Our winter theme park planning tips
Check ride availability before booking. Winter operation is much more variable than summer, particularly for outdoor rollercoasters.
Do not assume every Christmas event is a normal theme park day. Alton Towers Christmas and Phantasialand Wintertraum, for example, offer completely different levels of ride availability.
Use the shorter daylight hours to your advantage. One of the best things about winter theme park trips is getting night rides without staying in the park until extremely late.
Prepare for the weather. Waterproof layers, gloves and warm clothing make a huge difference when spending an entire day outside in November, December or January.
Check maintenance calendars. European parks that remain open throughout winter often use the quieter period for attraction refurbishment.
Compare short breaks as well as day tickets. Winter hotel packages can sometimes make European parks particularly attractive, especially when combining Europa-Park with Rulantica or spending multiple days at Disneyland Paris.
The theme park season doesn't have to end
For UK visitors, November still provides one final opportunity for major rides and fireworks before most of the country's biggest rollercoasters disappear for winter.
Christmas then brings a different type of theme park season, particularly for families.
But if you are prepared to travel into Europe, winter can still mean proper coaster days.
Phantasialand, Europa-Park, Efteling and Disneyland Paris demonstrate just how different the European winter season can be, with major attractions continuing alongside Christmas lights, entertainment and seasonal food.
So while the traditional 2026 theme park season may be ending, there is no need to put the coaster calendar away just yet.
