Disney is officially building a brand-new theme park resort in the Middle East - and it could become one of the most ambitious projects in the company’s history.

The new resort, often referred to online as Disney Abu Dhabi or Disneyland Abu Dhabi, will be built on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The project marks Disney’s seventh global resort destination and its first ever theme park in the Middle East.

While the project is still years away, Disney has already confirmed several major details - including where the park will be located, who is developing it and why the company believes Abu Dhabi is the perfect fit.

Here’s everything we know so far.

Where Will Disney Abu Dhabi Be Located?

The new Disney resort will be built on Yas Island - a growing entertainment destination already home to several major theme parks.

Current attractions on Yas Island include Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld.

Disney has confirmed the new resort will sit along the waterfront, giving it a very different setting from most existing Disney castle parks.

That waterfront location is one of the most interesting parts of the project. Rather than simply copying the layout of Disneyland, Magic Kingdom or Disneyland Paris, Disney Abu Dhabi already looks like it could have its own visual identity from day one.

Is Disney Actually Building And Operating The Park?

Interestingly, Disney will not directly own or operate the resort.

Instead, the project is being developed, funded and operated by Miral - the Abu Dhabi company behind several of Yas Island’s existing attractions. Disney Imagineering will lead the creative design of the resort and provide operational oversight.

That makes the project more similar to Tokyo Disney Resort than Walt Disney World. Tokyo Disney Resort is owned and operated by the Oriental Land Company, while Disney provides creative input and licensing.

Disney has said the Abu Dhabi resort will be “authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati”, which suggests the park will combine familiar Disney storytelling with design choices inspired by the region.

When Could Disney Abu Dhabi Open?

Disney has not announced an official opening date yet.

However, comments around the project suggest the resort is unlikely to open before the early 2030s. Large Disney theme park developments typically require several years of design, planning and construction before guests can walk through the gates.

A realistic opening window currently appears to be somewhere around 2030 to 2032, although that could change depending on planning, construction and the final scale of the resort.

For comparison, major Disney expansions and new park projects are rarely quick. With this being a completely new resort in a new market, Disney and Miral will likely want to get the design, infrastructure and guest experience exactly right.

What Will The Resort Look Like?

Early concept art points towards a futuristic waterfront Disney resort rather than a traditional castle park copy.

Disney has only released limited concept art so far, but the images shown already look very different from previous Disney resorts.

The artwork appears to show a futuristic castle-like structure, large waterfront areas, modern architecture, dramatic lighting and a resort that blends into the coastline.

That does not mean every ride, land or attraction has been revealed. At this stage, Disney has not confirmed any specific lands, IPs or attractions for the park.

Still, the overall tone is clear. Disney Abu Dhabi does not look like it is trying to be a direct copy of Disneyland Paris, Magic Kingdom or Shanghai Disneyland. It looks like Disney wants this to feel like a next-generation resort.

Will Disney Abu Dhabi Be Indoors?

This is currently one of the biggest questions surrounding the project.

Disney has not officially confirmed whether the park will be fully indoors, partially enclosed or mostly outdoors.

However, many fans believe indoor elements are highly likely due to Abu Dhabi’s climate and the success of nearby indoor attractions like Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi.

Others expect Disney to use large-scale shade structures, climate-controlled lands, indoor queues and next-generation cooling technology to help manage the heat.

For now, the honest answer is simple: we do not know yet. Disney has not confirmed exactly how the park will be designed for the hottest parts of the year.

Why Did Disney Choose Abu Dhabi Instead Of Dubai?

Despite many people online calling the project “Disney Dubai”, the resort is officially being built in Abu Dhabi.

The decision actually makes a lot of sense.

Abu Dhabi has spent years building Yas Island into a global entertainment destination, while Miral already has experience working with major international brands.

The location also gives Disney access to a huge international audience. The UAE is well placed for visitors from Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia and Africa.

Unlike some Disney resorts that mainly serve one domestic or regional market, Disney Abu Dhabi could become a true global tourism destination.

Is Disney Abu Dhabi Still Happening?

Yes - the project is still moving forward.

Construction has not officially started yet, and there is still a long road ahead before guests are booking trips to the resort. But Disney and Miral have continued to discuss the project publicly, and Disney leadership has repeatedly framed Abu Dhabi as an important part of the company’s future parks strategy.

Josh D’Amaro, now CEO of The Walt Disney Company, was previously chairman of Disney Experiences and played a major role in Disney’s global parks expansion plans.

That makes Disney Abu Dhabi especially interesting. It is not just another licensed resort - it is tied closely to Disney’s wider ambitions for international growth, new technology and next-generation park design.

What Rides Could Disney Abu Dhabi Have?

At the moment, Disney has not confirmed any rides or lands for the park.

That has not stopped fans from speculating.

Given the climate and location, it would not be surprising to see a heavy focus on indoor attractions, immersive dark rides and highly themed environments. Disney could also use the resort to introduce newer technology without being tied too closely to the layout of older castle parks.

Obvious possibilities include major Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars franchises, although nothing has been announced.

The most exciting possibility is that Disney Abu Dhabi may not simply recycle what already exists elsewhere. If Disney truly wants this to be one of its most advanced destinations, the park could include new ride systems, new land designs and experiences built specifically for the region.

Final Thoughts

Disney Abu Dhabi may still be years away, but it already feels like one of the most fascinating theme park projects in the world.

A waterfront Disney resort in the Middle East was something very few fans expected - and with Disney promising a destination that blends Disney storytelling with Emirati culture, curiosity around the project is only growing.

There are still plenty of unanswered questions. We do not yet know the lands, rides, opening date or whether large parts of the park will be indoors.

But if everything goes to plan, Yas Island could eventually become one of the biggest theme park destinations on the planet - and Disney Abu Dhabi could be unlike any Disney resort we have seen before.
