Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi's highly anticipated Harry Potter land could reportedly open in 2029, with new details suggesting the huge indoor expansion is being designed with ambitions to stand alongside - or even surpass - the world's existing Wizarding World attractions.
The Harry Potter expansion has been known about since 2022, but Warner Bros. World has so far revealed remarkably little about what guests will actually find inside. A new report from The National has now shed more light on the scale of the project, including a possible opening timeframe and just how high Warner Bros. appears to be setting the bar.
A possible 2029 opening for Harry Potter in Abu Dhabi
The most significant new detail is a potential opening year.
Entertainment + Culture Advisors, a consultancy working on the project, reportedly referenced an expected 2029 opening in a job advertisement earlier this year.
That date has not been officially confirmed by Warner Bros. World or operator Miral, however, so for now it should be treated as an indication rather than a firm opening date.
The park's own website continues to simply list the Harry Potter area as "under development", promising that the Middle East's first Harry Potter themed land will allow visitors to explore iconic Wizarding World locations "seen in an all-new way".
Site preparation reportedly began during summer 2025, almost three years after Miral and Warner Bros. Discovery first announced the project in November 2022.
Could Abu Dhabi rival Universal's Wizarding Worlds?
Perhaps even more interesting than the possible opening date is the level of ambition surrounding the project.
According to The National, Warner Bros. documentation indicates that the Abu Dhabi development is intended to deliver a Harry Potter environment capable of competing with the very best themed lands anywhere in the world.
That gives the project a particularly difficult benchmark.
Universal has spent more than 15 years developing Wizarding World attractions, beginning with Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure in 2010 and later expanding Harry Potter into Universal Studios Florida, Hollywood, Japan, Beijing and, most recently, Epic Universe.
Those lands have become known for unusually strict attention to detail - from architecture and shop windows to themed food, merchandise and attraction design.
Warner Bros. World therefore isn't simply adding another recognisable franchise to its line-up. It is entering a space where expectations from Harry Potter fans are already exceptionally high.
Being completely indoors could give Warner Bros. an advantage
There is one major difference between the Abu Dhabi project and Universal's existing Harry Potter lands: Warner Bros. World is completely indoors.
The vast climate-controlled park already houses Gotham City, Metropolis, Bedrock, Cartoon Junction and Dynamite Gulch beneath its roof, allowing attractions and themed environments to operate throughout Abu Dhabi's extreme summer temperatures.
For Harry Potter, that indoor environment could become a creative advantage as well as a practical one.
Sets and scenery do not have to withstand direct sunlight, rain or wind, while lighting can be controlled throughout the entire day. That potentially gives designers considerably more freedom when creating the atmosphere of locations such as Hogwarts or the darker corners of the Wizarding World.
It could also make transitions between locations much easier to control, something that could prove particularly effective for a franchise so reliant on atmosphere.
Hogwarts and Diagon Alley in the same land?
Exactly what will be built remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.
The National reports speculation that the expansion could include both Hogwarts and Diagon Alley within a single themed area - something no existing Harry Potter land currently offers in quite the same way.
Importantly, neither location has yet been officially confirmed by Warner Bros. World or Miral.
The park has only promised "iconic locations from the wizarding world", leaving plenty of room for the Abu Dhabi project to take a different approach from Universal's attractions.
There are also no confirmed ride details yet.
Warner Bros. World's wider expansion is substantial, however. Miral has previously confirmed that the park is preparing for its next generation of attractions with the Harry Potter themed land alongside two additional DC-themed rides.
Yas Island is becoming one of the world's biggest theme park destinations
The Harry Potter project also arrives during a remarkable period of expansion for Yas Island.
Warner Bros. World already sits alongside Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld and SeaWorld Yas Island, while Disney is developing its own new resort on the island.
Adding a major Harry Potter destination to that collection could further strengthen Abu Dhabi's position as an international theme park destination rather than simply a stopover for visitors travelling through the UAE.
There is still plenty we don't know. A 2029 opening has not been confirmed, the attraction line-up remains secret and even the exact Wizarding World locations guests will explore are yet to be revealed.
But if Warner Bros. really intends to challenge the standard set by Universal's celebrated Harry Potter lands, this could become one of the most fascinating theme park projects of the next few years.
