Disneyland's planned Avatar destination has been pushed further down the resort's development schedule, with Disney now prioritising its newly announced overhaul of Tomorrowland first.
The change doesn't mean the Avatar project has been cancelled. Disney still intends to bring the world of Pandora to Disney California Adventure, but the order of major projects at Disneyland Resort has shifted following D23 2026.
The latest roadmap now places the Avengers Campus expansion and upcoming Coco attraction first, followed by the reimagining of Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park - with Avatar coming later.
Tomorrowland moves ahead of Avatar
Disneyland Resort president Jill Estorino confirmed the change in project priorities during a media session surrounding D23 2026.
The Avengers Campus expansion and Coco attraction at Disney California Adventure are already moving forward, with those projects expected to arrive before Disney turns its attention to the wider Tomorrowland transformation.
Once that work progresses, the planned Avatar destination will follow.
That represents a noticeable shift for a project that Disney first announced several years ago and has since promoted as one of the most ambitious additions planned for Disney California Adventure.
Avatar is still coming to Disney California Adventure
Importantly, Disney has not cancelled the Avatar project.
The company once again showcased the development at D23 2026, including a physical model of part of the land and a model of the boat ride vehicle being developed for its headline attraction.
The California version of Pandora is being designed as a different experience from Pandora - The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida.
Concept artwork has shown a water-heavy environment inspired by the wider Avatar franchise, while the attraction itself is expected to form the centrepiece of the new destination.
What has changed is when guests are likely to experience it.
Disneyland's Tomorrowland is now a major priority
During the Horizons presentation at D23, Disney announced that Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park will undergo a substantial reimagining.
Imagineering says the project will introduce new attractions, more open spaces and new places for guests to dream about the future.
The aim is to restore the sense of optimism, movement and possibility that originally defined Walt Disney's vision for Tomorrowland.
Disney hasn't yet revealed exactly which existing attractions will remain, what will be replaced or what the new rides will be, but the decision to move the project ahead of Avatar underlines how significant the transformation is expected to become.
What happens to Monsters, Inc.?
The shifting timeline also creates questions around Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! at Disney California Adventure.
The attraction had been expected to close as part of preparations for the Avatar development, which is planned around portions of Hollywood Land and adjoining areas.
With Avatar now coming later in Disneyland Resort's construction pipeline, the Monsters, Inc. attraction appears set to remain open for longer than previously expected.
Disney hasn't announced a new closure date.
Why has the roadmap changed?
Disney hasn't suggested that the Avatar project itself is being abandoned.
Instead, the change appears to be about sequencing a growing list of large-scale developments across Disneyland Resort.
Avengers Campus is already expanding, Coco is moving towards construction, Disneyland's eastern gateway and transportation infrastructure are being redeveloped, and Tomorrowland has now joined the resort's long-term pipeline.
That creates a substantial amount of simultaneous work across a relatively compact resort.
Prioritising Tomorrowland allows Disney to focus first on one of Disneyland Park's most prominent existing lands before moving into another major expansion at Disney California Adventure.
Avatar may now be several years away
Disney has never announced an official opening date for the Avatar destination, and the latest shift makes its eventual debut even harder to predict.
With Avengers Campus, Coco and Tomorrowland now ahead of it in the development schedule, the Avatar project appears to be positioned as a longer-term addition to Disneyland Resort.
That could place its eventual opening towards the end of the decade or beyond, although Disney has not confirmed a timeframe.
For now, the important distinction is that Avatar hasn't disappeared - it has simply moved further back in the queue.
A changing future for Disneyland Resort
The reshuffle highlights just how much is currently planned across Disneyland Resort.
Avengers Campus is expanding, Coco is getting its first major Disney attraction, Tomorrowland is heading for a substantial overhaul and Avatar remains waiting in the wings.
That makes the question less about whether Disney is investing in Disneyland and more about which enormous project it chooses to build first.
For Avatar fans, the wait appears to have become longer. For Tomorrowland, however, the future suddenly looks considerably closer.
